about

In January of 2015 my good friend Josh Sparks and I retreated to a remote cabin in Craftsbury, VT to write a record. For 31 days we enjoyed winter solitude while we wrote, rehearsed, cooked, drank wine, rolled our own cigarettes and left with demos for about 16 songs.

This process would dictate the entire rest of our experience in making this record. Hence the name, Standards.

Shortly after our VT experience ended I had booked studio time with John Vanderslice at his fully analog operation Tiny Telephone in the San Francisco's Mission District. He understood our mission, eased our fears about tape recording and set the tone for Josh and I's excitement to commit ourselves to something new, something unique and take a chance on an experience we've never had and may never have again.

In June of 2015, Josh and I drove to San Francisco together over a two day period and lived in the bay area for another 30 days or so making this record with John. It was my first purely analog experience. We drank excellent coffee, learned a ton about analog gear and experimental process, let go of our preconceptions about what making music was about, cooked more, smoked more, watched the Hawks win the Stanley Cup and the Warriors win the NBA final. It was magical.

Finally, we returned to Chicago and Bob Weston managed the mastering duties at Chicago Mastering Service. We sat in on the session and observed the entire process. If you are fortunate enough to hold the vinyl version of this record, the pressing you are holding never once saw a computer.

This was our experience in standards. Everything from writing it, to recording it, to the artwork, the attention to detail. It was all there.
